In October 2021, I appeared in front of the House of Commons Public Bill Committee scrutinizing the UK Governments’ Subsidy Control Bill. In response to questions from MPs, I argued that transparency is key to ensuring value for money and effectiveness in government subsidies. Drawing on evidence from my book Spending to Win, I offered examples of best practice for government-funded subsidies. You can read the transcript of my testimony and watch the video.
In February 2023, I appeared before the House of Commons International Trade Committee in their inquiry on the UK's accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Drawing on my research on fisheries subsidies, I answered MPs questions about the CPTPP's rules regulating government support for fishing industries. You can watch the Committee at work here, read a transcript of my testimony here, and read the Committee's report here.
